Best DnD 5e Alternate Rules
At least the house rules that I have playtested, enjoyed, and personally use to spice up my Dungeons and Dragons game.
One of the great things about Dungeons & Dragons is that you can customize the game rules to your liking. I have added these house rules to my DnD 5e game because they fit my group’s play style. I also added rules to fix things in the game that I didn’t like as a Dungeon Master. The link below is to a Google Doc with a collection of all my current house rules.

How I Came Up With This List of House Rules
At one point, my dnd 5e house rules list was over 50 rules long. Since my years of playtesting, I have figured out what works well with my group, and I changed the rules accordingly. My group loves to roleplay and loves a good challenge, so I have tailored my dnd house rules in that direction.
I use these house rules in order to:
- Speed up the pace of the game.
- Provide a fairer playing field.
- Make the game more realistic and challenging.
- Add more roleplay opportunities.
- Clarify rules to keep the debating to a minimum at the table.
Why a Google Doc?
My house rules list has gone through multiple changes. I have added and removed rules as I see fit. The next time you look it this dnd 5e house rule list, it may be different. This is why I have it on a Google Doc, so I can easily change it when I discover new useful dnd 5e house rules.
When I was coming up with a list of house rules to add to my game, I did a lot of research. I wished there was a list of house rules all in one place. Since I could not find one, I made one and am sharing it with everyone. Hopefully, this list saves you time, and you find it helpful.
Why Use “This Specific” House Rule?
To help you understand why I made or added each house rule to my game. I added an “Explanation” section under each rule.
Enjoy!
Feel free to copy this document and customize it in any way that best fits your needs. I personally like to have a printout copy at the table when I play.
If you have any questions, need clarifications, or have any rule recommendations, please leave a comment. I will be responding to them.
